After the 2018 harvest, Autumn has shown from the very beginning a rainy side, with abundant and well scattered rain falls but no violent showers, which have enriched the hydro subsoil stocks. The transition to the winter season has been gradual with mild average temperatures that persisted for all winter months, which have been distinguished, comparing to autumn season, by scarce rain falls e few snow between middle December and end of January 2019. Those mild temperatures, on the other hand, have allowed an early start of the season, facilitating vineyards management, with a very rapid and continuous pruning. After that, we proceed with manuring our vineyards, only with organic substances, in order to restore energy and balance to the soil, preparing it for the spring awakening. An incredible importance has been given to the poles and rows maintenance, applying where needed the due replacements, and to the vines sanitizing (mostly of Barbera and Nebbiolo plants) deeply affected by grape diseases such as Esca and Flavescence dorée. This is a highly delicate phase, where the affected plants identification and their replacements must be done quickly and precisely: a profound knowledge and huge attention to the vineyards ecosystem is needed. Particularly for a Nebbiolo vineyard, we undertook an experimental use of natural essential oils to cure the spread and infections of Esca, always on the path against any use of synthetic chemicals in the vineyards: it will be possible to check results in future months.
