January 2024 Newsletter – From the cellar

But how do the wines of the vintage 2023 look like?

In our cellar, from the first weeks after the harvest, we were able to enjoy the cleanliness and finesse of the aromas released by the new wines. The acidity level is excellent, and at the same time, these are wines with good structure, richness and character.

We are in front of fascinating expressions, characterized by excellent colors, complexity, good harmony and great aging potential.

In conclusion, although it is still too early to take a final position, we can say that, based on our experience, there are all the prerequisites for the development of something important.

In terms of news, there is very little left to the release of our Barolos from the 2020 vintage – Barolo Cascina Nuova and Barolo Ravera – the 2019 Barolo Ravera Bricco Pernice and the 2018 Riserva – Barolo Ravera Riserva Vigna Elena.

The key factor of the 2020 season was the optimal climate, which allowed grapes to develop gradually and steadily and to reach a truly perfect ripeness. The direct consequence of such an excellent season was the production of particularly expressive and complex Barolos, with a fine and well integrated tannic texture.

The 2020 Barolo Cascina Nuova, despite being produced from the youngest vines of Ravera MGA, manages to masterfully combine complexity and pleasantness of drinking, thanks to elegant aromas and a sip full of energy and freshness.

The 2020 Barolo Ravera – defined by the wine critic Luca Gardini as “the best Barolo Ravera ever” – is saline, mineral, balsamic. What strikes us most about this wine is the tannic texture which, despite being present and typical, is already perfectly integrated and extremely silky. Length and depth suggest the quality of the vintage, in our opinion, one of the best of the last 20 years.

Regarding the 2019, many words were spent last year that allowed us to focus on the character of this excellent vintage. Summing up, 2019 favored the production of Barolos of good structure, basically robust, but made harmonious thanks to the presence of great finesse and acidity. Not an exception is the 2019 Barolo Ravera Bricco Pernice, which, besides fully expressing these gustatory characteristics, is endowed with a stratified aromatic framework, in which an elegant floral note emerges in a preponderant way. With this wine, we pushed on an even more unique and personal style.

And then, in conclusion, the 2018 Barolo Ravera Riserva Vigna Elena. As usual, this wine gives us an ascending climax of aromas and hints: from ripe strawberry to rose petal, then passing from incense to licorice and notes of medicinal herbs. A noble and complex wine, which does not lack in balance and vitality of the sip.
