December newsletter – From the vineyard

The year 2020 is coming to an end, and like every time we close a chapter, even this time of the year can be ideally transformed in a moment of contemplation and evaluation, to better face with renewed energy the approaching season. Working closely with Nature implies a peculiar forma mentis, more elastic and accustomed to difficulties, since it’s not up to us to dictate the tempo to the vineyards, but we learn instead every year to adapt and promptly response to changes, which will obviously show up on the path.

It comes thus natural to turn our gaze towards the just past harvest, while the vineyards are beautifully dressed in white, thanks to the abundant snowfall of the last days. As we have already anticipated in the summer newsletter, the vintage 2020 started during a quite dry Spring with mild temperatures, which have created the expectations for an early start of the growing season. This trend has fortunately been interrupted between end of April and beginning of May, period characterized by abundant rain shower and cooler temperatures. Thanks to these factor, the situation in the vineyard has been rebalanced , even if it required lots of care for the vines: shoot thinning were more frequent for Barbera and Dolcetto comparing to Nebbiolo, which instead needed a more gentle touch. Summer donated us mild temperatures, sunny days and scattered rainfalls, but above all considerable temperature range: all wines show in fact very perfumed bouquet with clear fruits and flower notes, as well as an incredible freshness and finesse.

Therefore, the 2020 harvest leaves us pretty satisfied: from beautiful grapes, good and healthy, have borne wine with intense perfumes and bright colors, nice alcoholic profiles kept up by acidity and freshness, but especially great complexity, which in the Barolo will be translate in an incredible drinkability and long aging potential.
